I just wanted to take a moment and talk about something that has been bothering me for a VERY long time: shame, specifically when it is associated with sexuality and nudity.
My confusion and frustration really started back in February of 2004 with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. For about half a second, Janet Jackson's right breast was exposed on LIVE television for the world to see during the Super Bowl XXXVIII Half-Time Show. I remember seeing it and thinking it was funny and that it was all just a part of the act. I also remember thinking she had on a pasty (similar to the one Lil' Kim wore to the 1999 MTV VMAs:
Shown Here) so it wasn't that big of a deal. (Come to find out later, what I thought was a pasty was in fact a nipple shield:
Shown Here ) So you can understand my pure shock and confusion to discover that "the world" (media) was in an uproar over a half a second clip of a woman's breast; specifically, being able to see her nipple.
"What is the problem??" I thought to myself, "Didn't we all suck on our mother's nipple as a child? Shouldn't the female breast be celebrated for giving us all sustenance and life throughout all of humanity's existence?" Why are people so "shocked and appalled" by a little nipple?
The only thing I can rationalize about the situation is that people are shocked and appalled by the shame. The shame for possibly having a sexual thought. The shame of thinking about the thoughts of the guy sitting next to you for possibly having a sexual thought. Then having to think about, "that man might be having a sexual thought and that means his penis might be receiving too much blood and... OH MY GOD I'M THINKING ABOUT HIS PENIS! I'm so ashamed! NOOOOO!!! SEX! PENIS! VAGINAS! BREASTS! FLUIDS! SEMEN! PUBIC HAIR! TESTICLES! BUTTHOLES! OH MY GOD I'M A TERRIBLE PERSON!!!"
I'm just assuming that this is what must have gone through people's heads after they were forced to see a half a second worth of Janet Jackson's pierced nipple.
Perhaps people wouldn't be forced to have such intense thoughts over a nipple if society wouldn't force so much shame on sex and nudity. How can it be illegal, in some places, to be the way we were born; nude? Is it because a guy might see a nipple and get an erection? Is it because you might see a man's pants growing in the groin area? Is it because you might see an ERECTION!?!
Basically, I've just decided the world is terrified of boners. And anything that could possibly create a boner IS EVIL!!! Except when you have to make a baby. BUT! God forbid, don't look at it! KEEP IT UNDER THE COVERS!!! Boners are evil!!!
Anyways, this is just the tip (pun intended) of the iceberg. I've decided I am beyond fascinated by this topic and I must explore it in my art! And I just thought I would share that with everyone who watches me. Please, if you have any thoughts on the topic, let me hear it! Comment!
